Overview:

This programme provides information on how best to sustain and manage linked systems of people and nature. It is a new science that builds on a range of existing disciplines from ecology and evolution to sociology and economics. Conservation biology is becoming increasingly important for human wellbeing as the impacts of human activities on the biosphere become more significant.

The discipline of conservation biology is undergoing a paradigm shift, in which notions of preservation and paternalism are being replaced by an ethic that recognizes the complexity of linked social and ecological systems and the critical need for solid interdisciplinary research.

Target group:

The MSc Conservation and Natural Resources Management aims at attracting qualified graduates with honours degrees in Bachelor of Science Technology – BST (Biology, Chemistry); Bachelor of Science – BSc; Bachelor of Education, with Biology as a subject; Geography, Bachelor of Environment Science Technology and Management; Bachelor in Conservation Biology; Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Botany; Bachelor of Science in forestry; Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management; Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture; Bachelor of Science in Conservation, Wild Life, health and Management; Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management; Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management; Bachelor of Science in Oil and Petroleum Production; Bachelor of Science (Coastal and Marine Resources Management); Bachelor of Science in Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources Management; Bachelor of Science in Agriculture; Bachelor of Science in Agroforestry .

 

Program Duration: Two years

Programme Structure

The minimum duration of the programme for a full time mode is two (2) academic years equivalent to four (4) semesters. A semester shall be seventeen (17) weeks with fifteen (15) weeks of lectures and two (2) weeks of examinations. Registered students for this mode shall be required to take ten (10) core courses amounting to 33 credit units and in addition an elective course (track) of the two (2) elective courses amounting to 6 credit units in the second semester of the first year. They will all be required to prepare a dissertation equivalent to 15 credit units in the second year. The background and /or interest of the student is used as criteria for selection of the research topic.

Students of this mode will be expected to cover the courses by personally attending lectures (L), participating in seminars/ group discussions (S) carrying out Field/ laboratory practicals (P) and out the research ( R ) The maximum period to complete the programme by this mode shall be four (4) years from time of admission.
