About Us

The Department of Biological Sciences is headed by Dr Asio Santa Maria. It was formed in 2003, merging from previous Department of Biology at Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK) and the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo.

Since the formation of Kyambogo University in 2003, the Biological Sciences Department has been spearheading in the training of highly practical and skilled life scientists both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Graduates from this Department have used learned skills in biotech, education and research to support sustainable development nationally and internationally.

Academic Programs

The Department runs a total of Six (9) academic programmes: Three postgraduate programmes, two undergraduate programmes and one Diploma programme.The Department also services three undergraduate programmes from School of Education

PhD in Biological Sciences

The overall objective of this progamme is to develop a high calibre of research and scientific manpower equipped with knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and commitment to serve in fields of research, industry, education and Biological Sciences related disciplines as well as leadership positions.

Master of Science in Conservation and Natural Resources Management

This programme provides information on how best to sustain and manage linked systems of people and nature. It is a new science that builds on a range of existing disciplines from ecology and evolution to sociology and economics. Conservation biology is becoming increasingly important for human wellbeing as the impacts of human activities on the biosphere become more significant.

Master of Public Health

This programme envisages producing re-trainable, skilled and well informed graduates who can operate in both local and global markets. The graduates from the programme provide a critically needed specialized human resource with advanced knowledge and skills in Public Health. Human capacity built addresses health promotion at community and policy levels.

Bachelor of Science Technology (Biology)

The programme trains all round graduates who are well equipped to cope with the rapidly changing scientific demands and trends in the Biological and Medical fields. The proposed training will also give the students opportunities for further studies in their careers as science technologists, researchers and managers at postgraduate levels.

Bachelor of Science with Education (Biological)

This programme trains BSc. Biology teachers to meet world class standard of teaching and carrying out research in biology field.The course is designed not only to meet the students study needs but also to meet the community biology challenges such as Applied Entomology and Parasitology; Human ecology; environmental issues and conservation; and management of natural resources.

The Department of Biological Science consist of courses on Animal, Microbial, Biotech, Public health, Conservation and Plant Sciences. Training is based on world class teaching and research.
